Part of the Motherhood Print Collection, this original collection of three poems by Laura, founder of The Key to it All explores the complex, profound and life-changing effect of motherhood.

Three separate prints, combined to create this unique trio. The texts read:

 Poem 1

I thought I’d got this bedtime sorted

Routine - no problem - love me a plan

A bath, a book, a little chat, lights out,

“I love you!” and that’s that

But oh; how you have proved me wrong -

Jumping up and down for so very long that

I have started feeling dizzy

Why are you being so very busy

(Am I the one who’s got it “wrong?”)

I just want a cuppa (for cuppa read wine)

This time in the evening it should be all mine

I love you but I just need some space:

I love you but you seem to think it’s a race -

to see who can win at messing about,

to see who can provoke me first to shout -

“THIS IS GETTING SILLY JUST GET INTO BED!

YOU’RE OVERTIRED, JUST GET YOUR HEAD

RIGHT ONTO YOUR PILLOW

AND SHUT YOUR EYES!”

But guess who’s in for a big surprise?

It isn’t a teddies big picnic;

(We’re not going on a bear hunt)

It’s wind the mummy up,

Wind the mummy up,

Pull pull, let’s be blunt:

Mummy’s had enough,

Mummy’s given up

Mummy thinks you're being a…

oh look, you're asleep.

Poem 2

How can it be

that you can make me

so very angry

you make me despair,

hot, acid anger, frustration that I

Can’t get you to

LISTEN

and then such ecstatic bliss

a glimpse into awe

a belief that you must have been a star before

because you shine so bright

you fill the room with your endless beam

We are being tested

but we will not be found wanting

we look up

we look out

we carry on.

Poem 3

You clutch your dimpled arms around my neck

The gossamer smoothness of your skin, as unblemished as your sunny soul

Your sticky face (how - you’ve only just had a bath) squashes against mine,

Your hot minty breath warming my nape, dear heart…

Your breathing slows, and calms and deepens

All is calm, all is bright.*

And then the magic happens.

I feel our cocoon spinning around us

A golden thread, that glows and grows

that spins and weaves

that supports and soothes

my heart so heavy with love and peace

my soul shining with a mother’s fire

and there’s the ache, the bittersweet

because the cocoon is weaving tighter

but I know you have to go and grow and glow

to leave my nest and follow your smile

but just for now my darling boy

our cocoon is spun and hums with the strength of an infinite

“I love you”s and

“twinkle twinkle little star”*

how I wonder what you are

each and every day

my sunny soul

my boy

my joy

*to be sung, should you so feel like it.
